Foundation Day Programme of the renowned Hem Sheela Model School.

            In the auspicious occasion of the new Year HSMS, Durgapur celebrated their grand 16th Foundation Day in a gala way in presence of many eminent persons, dignitaries of this Twin City and even from abroad. The auditorium was filled up with hundreds of parents, Students, Teachers, Guests and other interested persons. Their theme of celebration was ‘Ode to Humanity’ and portrayed the colours of different gift of the nature through various dance, drama to entertain the audience.  The programme was started sharp at 5 PM with the symphony by the School children. After lighting of the Lamp by the Guests they presented a number of colourful events by the School children in which the students from Nursery to the seniors took active part in this function.
            After the Principal’s valued address the Guests were honoured by flower bouquet. The best Teachers and the bright and meritorious students were also felicitated by the Honourable Guests then. In the concluding part they released their School Magazine. It was really a colourful presentation where the participants were highly applauded by the audience and the dignitaries. When there was a cold wave outside the place, the auditorium was filled up with the enthusiastic parents and audiences.
            The School has been established by Dr. Rabindra Nath Roy a professor of Chemistry and Dr. (Mrs.) Protima K. Roy, Professor of Education and Child Development at Drury University in the loving memory of their parents. Late Hemchandra Roy and Late Sheelabati Roy. Hem Sheela Model School took its first step   on 12th March 1995 with 360 students and 6 teachers in classes Nursery, Preparatory and Class-1 at Dhandabag Site. It is completely a non-profit making institution, committed to the excellence in academics and personalized liberal education for the holistic development of its students. Under the canopy of Hem Sheela Model School, now they have around 4000 students in 3 campuses and a large Well Maintained, Sprawling Campus of 20 acres at Jawaharlal Nehru Avenue and 4 acres at Dhandabag on ancestral land & a Tribal school at Khatguria. Their infrastructure, as mentioned below, is also highly appreciable and most probably rare now in this city:

  • Library – At Dhandabag & Jawaharlal Nehru Avenue Campus to cater to the literary and intellectual pursuits
  • Audio –visual & Computer Education – where students are exposed to multimedia presentation and audio-visual coordination
  • Hi-tech laboratories – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer
  • Water Harvesting Project where ‘Rain Water Harvesting Technique’ is being taught
  • Day Care Centre for children of HSMS Staff
  • Cafeteria for students and teachers’ refreshment
  • Green campus and Eco club for creating mass awareness on Green Conservation
  • Facilities of physically challenged students
  • Solar panels to conserve energy
  • Large play grounds.

The School has 134 well trained, dedicated, loving and affectionate Teachers at the ratio of 1:29 and they all provide personal and pastoral care to support the special education and behavioural needs of each student.

Principal Soumen Chakraborty who has already bagged his Best Principal Award in National Science Olympiad and International English Olympiad organized by Science Olympiad Foundation boasts of his other faculty members like Ms. Indira Pandey who has got the Best Coordinator Award from National Science Talent Search Examination, Miss. Bina Chatri has successfully translated Nepali poet’s work in Hindi. The original text is used in Graduation classes in Nepal University, Mr. Somnath Adhikary, Department of Art in HSMS, is a nationally acclaimed artist who has exhibited his works in prestigious galleries in Kolkata, Delhi & even in Bangladesh and many such talented teachers. 

The School also organizes an off campus Hem Sheela Model School for the first generation learners among the Tribal Children at Khatguria – a small Adivasi village since June 2007. It was started with only 41 students and two tribal teachers from Khatguria village. The School has been built up for the education of the poorest of the poor tribal children and empowerment of tribal women. At present there nearly 200 hundred students in this off-campus elementary school. The students are now exposed to various subjects like English, Bengali, Mathematics, Art and Craft. The School is not only catering to the needs of these tribal children of Khatguria but also helping the tribal women to be financially independent by various skills training programme. In this mission the School Authority also arranged an exhibition-cum-sale gallery in which a number of people gathered to enjoy their skills and to purchase some of their  attractive handicrafts.
               Principal says, “Our aim is to provide the best education to its pupils. Our concern is to develop the qualities of integrity, honesty, trust, compassion and tolerance to see that courage and honesty have their due reward and to promote a spirit of enquiry in the pupils. The pursuit of excellence encouraged in the School rests on the positive belief that every child has potential to produce the work, the quality of which can be described as first class”.
   The Principal always requests the parents and guardians to give quality time to their child/children for better understanding of their learning processes and to lead them to a successful life and a bright career and to spread the fragrance and beauty in every sphere and every corner of the universe.
