Inauguration of two Ladies Toilet-cum-Bathrooms for the slum dwellers of Tilak Road, DGP - by the Rotary Club of Durgapur Central.

The slum dwellers of Tilak Road, B-Zone, Durgapur-5, just behind the Kumarmangalam Park, are lucky enough since the women folk need not to search a hiding place further inside the crowded township area to attend their nature’s call. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Durgapur Central who atleast thought for such plight of the slum dwellers and relieved them from such a disgraceful affair for evacuation of their bowels in the open lands that too scarce now in the township area.

Mrs.Madhuchhanda Sengupta, President of Rotary Club - inagurating the Toilet.
On 11th March 2012 two Toilets-cum-Bathroom strictly for Ladies were inaugurated at Tilak Road Slum Area by Mr. Subhankar Sinha Roy, the Additional Police Commissioner. “We have constructed two units of Toilets cum Bathroom in the Slum Area under District Grant Project of Rotary International – District 3240. We all express our gratitude to the District Governor Rtn. Prabhat Kedia (Gwahati) for his profundity in this noble mission. ”- said Mrs. Madhuchhanda Sengupta, the President of Rotary Club of Durgapur Central.

Subhankar Sinha Roy said, “Now in Durgapur almost daily we are witnessing the inaugural ceremony of Malls, Hotels, Parks and many other places of amusement. Even people of this twin city are going to see that planes are landing here. But concern for the slum dwellers, for the destitute and have-nots in this city are really insufficient. Thanks to the Rotary of Durgapur Central who has done really a very nice thing for the women folk of this Slum Area who had no access to toilets and are now proud owner of such facilities built through the help of Rotary Club of Durgapur Central. ”

Though this City is developing in all the fields yet a large chunk of people live in slums scattered in various places here. They all survive in unhygienic conditions. Some even take their shelter under the shade of trees in noon and under the open sky or inside the abandoned dilapidated buildings in night. Their conditions become more miserable during monsoon. They all struggle for their food toiling hard labour yet they are deprived of the basic facility of attending their nature’s call. In morning when a large number of health seekers start their walking at dawn they feel shame to see the sight that a large number of people are squatting in this civilized city.

Since Sanitation issue is of magnanimous nature, Dist. Governor Rtn. Prabhat Kedia (Gwahati) and Asst. Governor Rtn. Saptarshi Das (Bolepur) all praised the endeavour of the team work of all the Rotarians under the leadership of the President Mrs. Madhuchhanda Sengupta. “Public sanitation is a serious social and environmental issue that seems to be getting the lowest priority in our society. ”- said Rtn. Mr. Kedia, the Dist. Governor.

In this Slum area Vibekananda Vani Prachar Samity runs a Primary School as Vibekananda Vidyapeeth. A few years ago the children who were wandering even in unclothed conditions on the streets and other areas are now attending their school regularly wearing school uniform with the school kits and all are happy. “We arrange for Mid-day Meal and Uniform for the students of this School. Rotary Club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally and centrally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education. We arrange medical camp and pulse polio camp in various places in this city regularly.” – said Rtn. Dr. Sabuj Sengupta.
