Introduction of Digital Teaching System in the renowned Hem Sheela Model School, Durgapur.

The conventional scene that the teachers are entering the classrooms with a piece of chalk and a duster has become a thing of past atleast in the renowned Hem Sheela Model School, Durgapur. This improvement is not only limited in a particular section of a higher class, it is for one to all from Nursery to Class-XII and all are happy. Henceforth even Nursery kids also will learn to  access computers on their own. This miracle has been done by the Hem Sheela Model School with the immense help from the Board of Trustees of Drury University. “2nd March this year will definitely be treated as  a red letter day as the School has attained another milestone. Chairman of the Board of Trustee Mr. Lynn Chipperfield and Former Chairman Mr. John Beuerlein both from Drury University graced the occasion and inaugurated the Smart Board facility in all the classes to their sister school – Hem Sheela Model School. ” – says Soumen Chakraborty, the Principal of this School.
SMART Board interactive white board helps to improve learning outcomes immensely. Combining the simplicity of a white board with the power of a computer the Smart Board interactive white board helps to deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink and at the same time save time and work and all happens with the simple touch of a finger.

“The Smart Board is an interactive, electronic white board which can enhance instruction and learning. The smart note book software makes it possible for teachers to create content rich, dynamic lessons which address specific student skills” – said the Principal further.

During inauguration Mr. John Beuerlein and Mr. Lynn Chipperfield both said, “It will help largely for the purpose of demonstration anything that is required even to make a thing more understandable.  The teacher can set example from the other sources through this board instantaneously. It can accommodate difficult learning styles and all ages of student will respond favourabaly. It can interface well with other peripherals. Moreover it will facilitate techno aided education and this will make classes more lively and interactive.”

The entire teaching faculty is extremely happy and excited to undergo the Smart Board Training and impart their knowledge in the classes which will definitely escalate the academic standard of the School. The hi-tech Physics, Chemistry and Bio-Technology labs along with the Advanced Computer Lab will add to the feathers of Hem Sheela and carry its legacy to greater heights.
Ms. Anindita Home Chowdhury, Vice Principal says, “The introduction of such Smart Board will definitely not lessen the importance of teachers rather it will help them more and more. It will give the teachers instant access to a vast array of electronic resources. It will enable seamless links to be made between the technology and the subject materials and the scope for flexibility & imaginative lesson planning is also huge.”
Beside the inauguration of the Smart Board for all the classes the Present and the Former Chairmen of Drury University inaugurated the Advance 3D Computer Labs, English Language Labs, Hands on Activity Lab, Swimming Pool in the campus of this school and a large fully air-conditioned Auditorium which is  probably the second to none with any school  in this city with all modern facilities.
But the magnanimity of the Board of Trustees of Drury University is not limited on the development of their Sister School HSMS only. Their endeavor for the deprived children in the underprivileged area is also highly appreciable. Since 2007 they organize an off campus Hem Sheela Model School for the first generation learners among the tribal children at Khatguria a small adivasi village. It was started only with a minimum number of students and now nearly 300 students are there. They all are indebted to Dr. Rabindra N. Roy and Dr. (Mrs.) Protima K. Roy for whom today they are able to read and write and can know what is right or wrong and for whose sincere involvement the total socio-economic scenario has completely been changed there. The women folk also are happy and now they are financially independent for undergoing various training and developing their skills in embroidery, picco, handicrafts, sewing and other skill work and thus for their earning.  Now this village has become the neighbours’ envy and people are overwhelmed to see that the advasi women are using computers and are also well conversant in calculation about their requirement of cloth materials and maintenance of their accounts through calculator machines.

Post lunch both the Chairman visited Protima Child and Woman Development Center at Khatguria village and met the Tribal Women and visited the class rooms at the Tribal School. Since 2011-12 teachers from the main campus have been rendering skill training in knitting and sewing twice a week to the tribal women towards making them self reliant and empowering the community through the touchstone of education and health facilities. At present these tribal women not only have sewing machines but they are facilitated with embroidery and picco machines as well which will enhance their working skill.
In fine the school authority expressed their gratitude to Mr. John Beuerlein and the Trustees for such magnanimous donation towards the development of Drury Hem Sheela Recreation centre which consist of Amphitheatre, Swimming Pool, Sports Complex and Gymnasium.
