History reveals that Digha was discovered by Warren Hastings in the year 1823 accidentally when he lost his way. It was then 8 kilometers inside a forest. The present Digha was however developed by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who planted trees on the dune. Now the casuarinas plantation all along the coast is very enchanting. The prettiness of the Digha Beach has fascinated the tourist ever since the days of Warren Hastings. Presently Digha is seven extended kilometers of enjoyable and frolic and referred to as Beer Cool. Anybody can chill out in the sun, placid sea, surf on the sand and many safely take a dip. Anybody can view both sunrise and sunset at Digha Sea Beach which reflects the salty waters of the Bay of Bengal are something straight off an artist’s easel. The sea at Digha is calm and shallow for about a mile from the beach making it quite safe for swimming.

 On the brink of Digha there are many other tourist attractions as well like Chandaneswar, Shankarpur, Mohana, Udaipur, Amarabati and others. Besides  there are Science Center, Marine Aquarium, Science Park and a lot of spots to be enchanted. Shankarpur is a virgin beach as yet and that is a recent discovery. It is a twin beach around 14 km from Digha along the Contai Road. It is now developed as a sea resort withy hotels. It offers nearly all the pleasures of a private beach with casurina plantations. Shankarpur is mainly credited for all the advantages of Digha and decreasing the crowd of Digha. It can boast of a wide and unspoilt beach, casuarinas groves by the side of a gentle sea and a good climate round the year. Apart from the long, tree-lined beach the main attraction is the Shankarpur Fishing Harbour Project. Mohana or Delta is also a nice place with a scenic backdrop. Lots of hotels and resorts are available there. Fishermen catching fish and crabs standing or wading through knee deep water is a very beautiful scene to enjoy there.
