“FIRE PREVENTION IS THE BEST INSURANCE”

“FIRE PREVENTION IS THE BEST INSURANCE”

We all know that Insurance is an arrangement by which a Company or the State undertakes to provide a guarantee of compensation for specified loss, damage, illness or even death in return of payment of a specified premium. Now the term has become common in our life. Today we pay lot of money as premium for the insurance of various valuable things from car to gold, from home to life and for what not!

Similarly the industries and  various other organizations now opt for Fire Insurance Policy for the entire movable and the immovable property located at particular premises and is paying a good amount of money as ‘premium’. There are various types of Fire Insurance coverage but above all the ‘FIRE PREVENTION INSURANCE POLICY’ is the best and in this policy none is to pay any premium but some care and attention. Fire is such a thing that has the ability to make us warm in our cozy home in the chilled weather and at the same time has the ability to make us homeless within a few seconds. FIRE is one of our basic tools in everyday life. We can hardly conceive a life without fire.  We use it from cooking up of different palatable dishes to the most complicated processes like internal combustion and electro-generation. FIRE is used in many more ways most scientifically from home to the industry, from the office to the restaurants, from the laboratory to the space research centers in some way or the other.  Fuels such as coal, natural gas or oil is burnt with the help of fire to get the source of energy or to produce steam that builds pressure and forces to turn the turbine, creating energy that supplies electricity. Fire is the root of all these processes. In some situation use of FIRE becomes the only practical solution to a problem but in others it is the worst possible alternative and poses an unacceptable threat of escape and destruction.

So to eradicate fire hazard and to get the maximum possible benefits from this FIRE  PREVENTION  INSURANCE  we must all learn to cultivate fire safety awareness everywhere.  A scintillation of fire from any corner can turn thousands years of endeavour and civilization into ashes in a very short spell of time. Detecting a fire, as early as possible after it starts, is the most crucial step in protection from fire hazards. The three principal indicators of a fire are: (i) smoke, (ii) heat, and (iii) flame. The success of early detection of a fire lies in recognizing one or more of these indicators of a fire. Detection can be planned through (i) self-help by every person by being vigilant around him or her, (ii) a system of alert volunteers for a specific place like a forest or a coal go-downs or a crowded place like circus or a religious or social congregation, and (iii) automatic detectors or
sensors such as heat sensors or flame detectors or smoke detectors in multi-storeyed buildings, markets, cinema halls, hotels, factories, offices or computer centres because no place is immune to fire and every person has to be always alert to the possibility of a fire hazard.

Gone are those when in case of any fire hazard the fire team had to locate the ponds and other water sources to combat with fire struggling inhumanely. Now for the advanced technology, they have totally improved their infrastructure and are using various tenders like Air Field Crash Tenders, Foam Tenders, Dry Chemical Power Tenders and many other extinguishing agents to combat with fire. Presently the high skilled professionals are fighting with fire most scientifically everywhere from the plant and industries, to the sky kissing buildings or in any remote corners of any localities to save the most valuable lives and properties without any caste and creed.

Role of Consumers.

Role of Consumers.

Consumers now play a vital role in the present economic system of a nation because in the absence of effective demand that emanates from them the economy is likely to be collapsed. One of the most important milestones in the consumer movement in the country is the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act 1986 to protect the interest of the consumers. It is one of the most progressive and comprehensive piece of the legislation covering all goods and services. Still many people in our country do not have the requisite knowledge of the basic rights of consumers as per the Consumer Protection Act.  Among them the rights for protection of the marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to lie and property, the rights about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and the price of goods or services, the right to be assured of access to variety of goods and services at competitive prices, the right to be heard, the right to seek redressal against unfair trade or restrictive trade practices.

Now the right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices or restrictive trade practices if the most important part of the Consumer’s Act. Two most popular methods of protecting consumers’ rights are (a) Redressal by the Government or other agencies and (b) ADR (Alternative Dispute Redressal). To provide cheap, speedy and summary redressal of consumer disputes, quasi-judicial bodies have been set up in each District and State and at the National Level also which are named as District Forums, State Consumer Disputes Redressal and National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Presently there are 604 District Forums and 35 State Commission.

Now the consumers can approach to the Consumer Forum for the disputes like Consumption in case of Electricity, Telecommunication, Builder and Purchasers, Promoters, Banking Services, Sale and purchase of Consumables and any goods. They can make complain to the manufacturing companies and service providers.

There are no legal formalities for filing the complaint. Anybody can make a complaint to the Consumer Court by writing the details on a plain sheet of paper and attaching the supporting documents like: Cash Memo, Service Contract, Guarantee or Warranty Cards which are to be submitted in the District Consumer Court. The consumers are not necessarily to go to any lawyer or professional for such legal assistance. They have every right to plead by themselves in the consumer court. Apart from the Government Redressal Agency there are several agencies which act as a Forum to mitigate consumers’ dissatisfaction against services provided by Banks, Telephone, Insurance Companies, Electricity suppliers and so on. To name a few : Ombudsman – related to Banking, SEBI – related to Shares, TRAI – related to Telephone, IRB – Insurance and etc.

I appreciate the initiative and sincere effort of the Durgapur Consumer Association for decades together in this matter. I sincerely appreciate the service of the octogenarian Mr. T. S. Mukherjee  for his relentless service and would be happy if some young blood takes the responsibility of this Association right now so that the new responsible person can have the golden advice from Shri Mukherjee in this aspect.

Celebration of 65th Year of DVC’s Foundation Day.

Celebration of 65th Year of DVC’s Foundation Day.

Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) the Country’s first multipurpose river valley project which was originally conceived with a view to tame the turbulent Damodar River came into being on 7th July 1948 and so this Day is celebrated in grandeur manner every year. This year DVC completes its 65th year of successful journey towards the service of the Nation with its multifaceted activities of controlling of floods, provision of irrigation, generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy and also soil conservation, unified tourism, fisheries, socio-economic and health development of villages within the radius of its areas.

To commemorate this Day DVC celebrated its grand 65th year of establishment in a gala way in all its field formations and in the Head Quarters at DVC Towers, Kolkata also.

In Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS) Mr. K. K. Singh, the Chief Engineer and the Project Head left no stone unturned to make the celebration a grand success with various Cultural Programmes, Debate Competition and Musical Dhamakas. On 26th of June a Motor Cycle Expedition was arranged from DTPS to DVC Towers. A team of 7th employees of DTPS with their own motorcycles carrying DVC Flag and wearing DVC’s Track Suit with pilot vehicles, ambulance, security personnel and Doctors started their journey sharp at 9 AM after a turn round throughout the DTPS Colony and reached DVC Towers at about 4 PM on the same day. The Chairman personally greeted all the participants warmly and made all arrangement for their health checkup and contentment in good ambience in DVC’s Guest House. The team returned on the next day when Mr. K. K. Singh, the Chief Engineer and the Project Head heartily welcomed the Team and made special mention for their brave and courageous expedition.

The Deputy Chief Engineer (Electrical & Instrumentation) and the Chief Co-0rdinator of this Celebration Committee Mr. G. K. Chanda says, “It is a grand success from our part. Besides this Motor Cycle Expedition we had arranged several other attractive programmes. To mention a few we had arranged a Debate Competition on Women Empowerment on 28th June  and a good number of women employees and the spouses of the EVC employees and CISF personnel took active part. Besides on 30th   June there was a Sit-N-Draw completion among the children and the employees of DTPS. ”

On the eve of the DVC’s Birth Day that is on 6th of July a cultural-cum musical programme was arranged in the Srijani Auditorium, City Center, Durgapur for the entertaining of all the employees and their family on this auspicious occasion. Sri Mollar Karmakar and Ms. Olivia Chakraborty, the ZEE BANGLA SA-RE-GA-MA-PA Champions and Amul Star Voice of India Top-4 graced the stage through their melodious songs and charismas.

Mr, K. K. Singh, the CE & Project Head on his short and valuable lecture greeted all the employees of DTPS for their sincere and valuable services in this oldest power station.

Similarly in Kolkata also DVC celebrated the programme on  7th July 2013 at the Science City Auditorium through  staging  a musical script –‘Aloke-Yatra Pathe’- depicting  a evolution of DVC since its coming into being through enacting ‘DVC Act 1948’ in the parliament and even entailing its socio-economic background and the series of devastating floods causing endless suffering to human as well as animal lives down the catchment area which earned Damodar river a bad  name referred to as the  ‘River of Sorrows’. The storyline culminated with its transformed and benefactor shape that made DVC a champion in the entire eastern region.

The script was penned by Prabuddha Chattopadhyay, a DVC employee posted at the headquarters in Kolkata while the music part was done by Nirmalya Roy, a familiar name in the Kolkata music circuit while choreography part was groomed by Avirup Sengupta, also an up and coming danseuse and choreographer in the city. The most remarkable phenomena was that the entire program was performed by all amateur singers, mainly employees themselves posted in Kolkata and their wards and the choreography part was performed mostly by DVC employees’ wards, mostly  from all the field formations viz. Durgapur, Mejhia, Panchet Dam, Maithon Dam, Chandrapura & Bokaro Thermal and Constructing units of Raghunathpur and Andal barring  a few from the headquarters. That added the programme  with an exceptional flavor. The idea of celebrating its Foundation Day in this unique way was masterminded by the Chairman of DVC, Mr. Rabindranath Sen.

The programme was inaugurated by the Governor of West Bengal, Mr.M K Narayanan with a comprehensive speech followed by Partha Chattopadhyay, Minister-In charge, State Industrial Ministry and Shri Uma Shankar, Power Secretary, Govt. of India. The Science City auditorium was almost packed to the capacity witnessed by  a 2000 plus strong audience. The program ended with a successful note.

5th Annual Programme of Shrutyonupras - the renowned Cultural Organization of Durgapur.

5th Annual Programme of Shrutyonupras - the renowned Cultural Organization of Durgapur.

“Shrutyonupras” – the renowned cultural organization to develop the Children and Youths’ mind celebrated their 5th Annual Programme on 1st and 2nd November 2014 at Netaji Bhawan, A-Zone Steel Township, Durgapur in a gala way.  Hundreds of people attended the programme and everybody praised the teamwork on both days. On the opening day that is on 1st November after the lighting of the sacred pradeep  the group of  80 students from the age group of six to sixty performed ‘Dak Gharer Dak’ based on Rabindra Patra Sankalan written by Tagore in different times to his close associates and relatives. It is clear from the study that Rabindranath’s patrabali as a literary form constitutes a substantial part of Tagoreana. Tagore used his mighty pen to write large number of letters not only as a medium of personal communication but to express his ideas on different aspect of life and society. “An in-depth study of the letters reveals that many times Tagore used letters to draft his ideas of short stories or even poems. Megh-o-Roudra, Postmaster, Mrinmayi, Samapti and Chhuti make their first appearance in Tagore’s Letters. ” says Goutam Chakraborty the Director of the total programme.
On the 2nd day of  their celebration  the little stars jointly presented the famous poem  ‘Durer Palla’ by Satyendra Nath Dutta and near about 50 tiny-tots participated on this programme and highly enamored  the audiences.  In the concluding part of this programme the  senior students  presented “Sesher Kabiter Pore” based on Tagore’s famous novel Sesher Kobita which recounts the love story of Amit Ray a barrister educated at Oxford, whose virulent intellectualism reveals itself in its opposition to all forms of tradition. He meets Labannya in a car accident and the romance builds up in the misty hills of Shillong. Though the novel is primarily set in Shillong, it was written when Rabindranath was in Bangalore.

The novel also contains a self-reference of significance in Bangla literature. By the late 1920s, more than a decade after his Nobel Prize, Tagore had become a towering presence in Bengal, and was facing criticism. But Shrutyonupras established the newer form of this novel based on the present situation.

The entire script of both the days programme has written, directed and established by the renowned elocutionist  Goutam Chakraborty whose tireless effort helped him to usher such a unique presentation especially by  such tiny tots. All the audiences applauded his newer form of production. The other variety of entertainment on those days was the digitalized presentation of those facts and incidents with scene and scenarios, through projection on the stage,  during the life time of Rabindra Nath Tagore and the total job was performed by Sanjiv Dutta and Suman Dutta.  Total music was directed by Bodhichitta Bandopadhyay.

Lastly they had arranged the Prize Distribution ceremony to the competitors of recitation of all age groups  which was held sometime in December last year and prizes were given by the renowned entrepreneur Jogendra Kumar Saha and Ajoy Roy the activist of Hemophilia of this city. Dipankar Chakraboty and Shampa Debnath presented Tagore Songs in their melodious tune  which ornamented the total programme. “All the Prizes prizes were sponsored  by one  benevolent custodian who is not interested to highlight his name for such noble activities”  - says  Goutam Chakraborty. Finally he is indebted to all the Guardians and the activist who sincerely helped him to materialize such a nice  programme in the heart of the city.  Nice food packets were served to all the artists and the guardians on the closing day by Shrutyonupras.

Heavy load of immersion of Idols poses a threat to human and aquatic life.

Heavy load of immersion of Idols poses a threat to human and aquatic life.

Now a good number of organizations here are cautious about the eco-friendliness of the city as a whole during the festive season. Innumerable awards are also being offered for strict adherence of the environmental directives of the WB Pollution Control Board and fulfillment of other criteria. But none is there to look after the pollution of water of Damodar which is the only source of drinking water in this vast industrial city like Asansol, Durgapur as a whole.
Not only the only river Damodar is polluted due to heavy load of immersion of the idols mainly from Biswakarma to Kalipuja the small ponds within the township area have also clogged with heavy idol structures. In Durgapur the mega puja organizers are trying to immerse their idols in Damodar River but the other several organizers are immersing their idols in the nearest ponds in Mohiskapur, J.C. Bose, Bhava and Palalshdiah and also in some ponds in the outskirt of the township. Though now it has become a practice of some groups of boys under the umbrella of some ‘dadas’ to remove the structures from the pond and river and to stack them in a place on their ‘might is right’ basis and selling the same to some agencies or dalals which are ultimately getting re-used but the main concern of the city people is about the contamination of water. Since pond water is stagnant and the quantity of water is much less than a river for its shallowness, it gets easily polluted and harms a lot to the human users, cattle and the aquatic small creatures.
Officials from the Pollution Department say ,”Damodar River during this festival season has become a cause of concern among the people of South Bengal as a whole because of increased use of cheap lead and chrome-based paints. Much use of plaster of Paris has also become a troublesome issue. Innumerable idols from Biswakarma Puja to Kalipuja are being immersed in Damodar and the use of lead based paints has become a threat to the survival of aquatic creatures and increase pollution in the already contaminated river water.  Since this is the only source of water for this vast industrial area and if pollution increases in such a manner, we don’t know what would be the future of this industrial complex ?”
Environmentalist say, “As lead and chrome are carcinogenic heavy metals which dissolve in water easily, immersion of such idols contaminate the river and the pond water. Recent trend to use plaster of Paris by the clay-modelers  which dries faster and stronger than ordinary clay is much harmful. It is insoluble and contaminates water bodies by forming an impermeable layer on the river bottom preventing biodegradation which causes buildup of poisonous gases that ultimately destroys aquatic plants and creatures. It is more harmful for fishes.”
In village areas still many a people use pond water in many ways. Even now men, women and their kids take bath most pleasurably in ponds. Cattles in large have no other option to quench their thirst. Their survival as a whole is getting endangered day by day. People are suffering from various skin diseases and allergies.
Balaram Sutradhar, a senior clay-artist says, “I heart from my father that in earlier days idols were painted with organic dyes mostly derived from stones, vegetable seeds, fruit, seashells and clay soil. But now all are using modern cheap inorganic paints and viscid substance(glue)  as they are cheap and easily available. In earlier days the finishing polish named as ‘gham tel’ used from seeds of turmeric but now chemicals are used which are poisonous even.”
Local  boys  who are  the main  users of the ponds, in many ways,  inter township  areas say ,”During immersion ceremony puja articles such as poly bags, foam cut outs, flowers, food offerings, decoration, metal polish, plastic seeds, cosmetic items all are thrown into the pond water. It has become a practice rather a custom of the people since ages not to throw the puja left over items anywhere but into the pond or river water directly. This makes the pond water more polluted.  We don’t know township people will when wake up in this pressing issue!
Officers of DMC say, “For the last few years we have taken necessary steps during this immersion time. A large  place has been earmarked for immersion of idols in Barrage area where the gangs clears the structures but for the contamination of water who  will take the responsibility  except the Organizers as a whole by a pledge not to accept the idols that are made of such polluting agents at least for the sake of the environment !  This has become the question – but who will bell the cat?

Swapner Haatpakha – the book of Poem by Sujit Das, a joint Commissioner of Excise Dept.

Swapner Haatpakha – the book of Poem by Sujit Das, a joint Commissioner of Excise Dept.
When the people as a whole are still suffering from the loss and  grief for the sudden demise of Sunil Gangopadhyay the tallest contemporary writer in the Bengali language , city people are happy to some extent for the revelation of a  new poet of their own - Sujit Das and who become famous and already cemented a place in the heart of several poets and poem lovers on the publication of his recent book of poems ‘Swapner Haatpakha’ published by Deep Prakashan, Kolkata.  It is the debut collection of poems by 43 year old Bengali Poet and it is certain that he may easily be designated as a next generation breed of poet.  The author is a Joint Commissioner of Excise Department and presently posted at Asansol. Now his name has become the talk of the town in the poetic world  and it is a matter of great astonishment to his fans and readers to think over the matter that how a busy Executive in such a respective position manages time to wander in the mainstream of artistic and intellectual life.
All his poems touched the heart of legendary poet Sunil Gangopadhyay and he has written in his own hand a foreword for Sujit’s maiden book, “The poems are written very much in a contemporary language.... the poet’s vision for the present happens to be his own achievement’. Sunil has also been categorical in saying, ‘love women and sex, everything has been portrayed with satire and serenity, but without any complexity whatsoever. The first thing that strikes me about ‘Swapner Haatpakha’is the presentation of the book, its cover page and illustrations. What is also worth mentioning about this collection is that almost all the poems may be termed as love poems and has got a varied range from psychedelic ambience, the poet’s childhood, the lush green serene North Bengal to the rigour of urban daily life. Amidst the frequently ironic arena of modern poetry this kind of candidness with a subtle rhythm between the lines will definitely make this book unputdownable.“
On his choice of words, the poet has set a new trend by frequent use of colloquial English and Hindi words. Such jugglery with words has added a new dimension to this book. like ‘ichchha mrityu athoba satyabati / eta kono choice? / sei arthe lalosa thekei /Mahakabyer Janmo/  tai  aaj theke anarjya bhashyai katha bolbo’, or for that matter, ‘tomake nabojanmo dilo purusher tritiyo nayon / dushcharitror pyancha o taar ashleel shabdo chayon / Riye diona jaanu, dio na jaane jigor / aak khoka ransom, baki ta taar por’.
What makes the situation of contemporary poets particularly surprising is that it comes at a moment of unprecedented expansion for the art. There have never before been so many new books of poetry published, so many anthologies or literary magazines. Never has it been so easy to earn a living as a poet. The proliferation of new poetry and poetry programs is astounding by any historical measure. Just under a thousand new collections of verse are published each year, in addition to a myriad of new poems printed in magazines both small and large. No one knows how many poetry readings take place each year but certainly it can be said that Sujit Das’s  Swapner Haatpakha’ will  take a great  position in the heart of the readers.
This book has also been highly appreciated by the renowned Bengali Poet Subodh Sarkar. “Sujit’s debut poetry book in unprecedented words. With such good words and evaluation under his belt, the debutant author seems to be very confident, ‘tomake khoon kore aaglai, notun Jakkho/ tomake goon kore samlai, purono akkhar/ naviti gobheer chhilo, chhiloi tow, bakalome sindhu/ tomake aabir dyay ni je, se bishwoninduk’. “
The book was published in Kolkata by Late Sunil Gangopadhyay along with the august presence of poet Arun Chakraborty (Writer of ‘Lalpaharir Deshe jaa’), Sri Subodh Sarkar and Smt  Bratati  Bandhopadhyay. Perhaps it is the last publication of the great poet.
The renowned  Poet and Eelocutionist Goutam Chakaraborty of Durgapur is very happy for  his maiden book of poem and says,  “Nothing will ever change the joy and happiness, amongst other things, that poetry has brought to his world. It is a gift and it should always be appreciated. It is a life changer, and a tool for success. No matter how much the world changes, it will never change the power of poetry. Poetry is important because it takes ideas and emotions and feelings that cannot be expressed in  other way and expresses them with imagery and that is why poets are so powerful.”
Fur such grand success the poet told to TOI, “Poetry has the power to make us all better people, either if we chose to write it or spend time reading/listening to it. If I didn’t have my love of poetry, I would not be able to express my feelings on anything, including myself. I realize it is the talent that is the key to my success and for that I will remain grateful.”
Diptangshu Mondal of  Deep Prakashan proudly mentioned that “This book has already achieved the best seller credential and its second edition is on the anvil.”
