Commendable
activities of the DSP Mahila Samaj in Durgapur under the Corporate Social
Responsibility of the Steel Authority of India Limited.
In Durgapur and
Asansol Industrial complex there are a number of clubs and organizations who
are rending various benevolent services to the people throughout the year. But
the commendable activities of the philanthropic organization DSP Mahila Samaj
supported by Durgapur Steel Plant under Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)
since 1961 is highly praiseworthy especially to the people of Below Poverty
Line (BPL) in this vast areas. It mainly works among the under privileged
sections of the society through various schemes like Free Education, Health, Vocational
Training and Employment generation, Spice making, Mother and Child Care Unit, Immunization
center and many other benevolent activities.
President
Mrs. Shobha Bajaj says, “DSP Mahila Samaj is the other name
for the service to the mankind, providing education, employment, medical aid to
the poor and down trodden people of the society. Recognizing that education is
an integral part of human development and accepting the constitutional right of
every person to education, SAIL has contributing to increase the literacy rates
in the areas of its operations mainly among the underprivileged section of
people. Particularly for the educationally backward people of this city DSP is running six Mukul schools in the steel township and imparting
education to a number of children below five years of age. Not only that our
Samaj provides Books and stationeries, Mid-day Meal, Teefin, Uniform including
shoes even the school bag and water bottles to all the students free of cost.
Our Samaj is very conscious of their need and run the well equipped schools
with all such facilities in order to dedicate them more in their studies. Actually
we work for the holistic development of the under privileged children providing
free education, health care benefits, recreation and support to well establish
them and self reliant in their life. ”
The
Samaj has also another school only for girl child belonging to the BPL
families up to class – V named as “SAIL Kanya Shiksha Niketan” in A-Zone
Steel Township where nearly three hundred
children get free education. Here also the students are provided with
books, uniforms, educational kits and all stationery items free of cost. A
morning teefin and hot nourishing meal at noon is provided to them daily. All
the BPL families are happy for taking the step of educating the ‘girl child’ in
their society.
“The
Vocational Training Center certified under the AICTE, West Bengal which is
founded by DSP’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) which has more than 30
students under training every semester. They are awarded with certificates at
the end of the course. Besides, we also have a sewing centre which provides
uniform to Schools, Hospital and other organizations. DSP Hospitals’ bed sheets
and other surgical gowns, ward boys’ dresses etc are also stitched and supplied
from time to time. In the field of Health and medical care Mahila Samaj always plays a pivotal role in the steel city. We run
a regular mother and child care unit for five days in a week and arrange a
weekly child immunization centre on our premises on every Tuesday and we immune
the new born babies and the child up to the age of five. We arrange an eye
checking camp in every month where all the children and women under BPL can
examine their eyes. In addition to that
various health camps have been organized in many places and we render our
services at places like leper’s colony at Sagarbhanga and other nearby villages
to combat the threat of Leprosy and other deadly diseases.” – says Mrs. Srimati
Chowdhury, Secretary of Mahila Samaj.
SAIL units have consistently partnered with
the universal immunization program and reported average immunization coverage
of a large percentage for BCG, Polio, Measles and other vaccines and the Mahila
Samaj always stretch their hands in this noble mission to combat the trench of
many such diseases through such programmes.. Not only that the Mahila Samaj
always try to serve the society in various ways. They have a spice centre where
in their own grinding machine they prepare pure spices that are available in
various centers of this town. Packaging and distribution work completely done
by the active ladies working in this society so that purity and wholesomeness
always remain in those products. We supply those spices by our own group in
various Clubs, Hospitals and other establishments. These products are not
available in the local market.
“Members of the
Samaj are no way behind in cultural activities. We arrange a kind of Fete, Teej, Holi Milan and Annual Day in
Samaj Premises. Stalls for various food and hand made products are installed in
the Mela by the ladies of this Samaj. The economy of the Samaj is being carried
out by the sale of old clothes and contribution by the members of Samaj besides
the other aids of SAIL under CSR. I am happy to say that under our guidance and
co-operation, we are sailing high to soar the sky as men are working hard in
their area to keep up the economy of the country”- said Mrs. Bajaj, the
President of the Samaj further.
“We all try to
serve our handmade food products in the entire Fete and other special occasions
and the most significant thing is that our honourable President also prepares
some innovative recipes and we sell in the fete in our different Stalls. Her
leadership style is inimitable. She always helps the Samaj to bring some changes and improvement in the entire sphere.
Actually her inspiration, co-operation and heartwarming approach is the essence
of our innovative ideas and concepts and devotion.” – says Srimati Chowdhury
further.
All year round
the activities of the Samaj is coordinated and conducted by the total sincere
efforts of the Secretary of this Samaj
