Haal Khata Anusthan in Bengal.

Haal Khata Anusthan

Even in this fast age of communication when lot of work is done through e-mail, SMS or through face booking, Haal Khata in poila baisakh still gains prominence in this city. All the traders have arranged to observe the day religiously and gorgeously. In fact it is the day to open new ledgers – the typical khata covered with red cotton cloth (lal shalu) and a thread to tie up the copy properly. People are now adopting a lot of new gadgets like Computer, Laptop to deal with the customers yet the age old ‘haal khata’ still serves a vital role in trading with the customers. Shop owners eagerly wait for the day to clear up the outstanding dues or debts from their customers.

All the shops in Benachity, Chandidas, Asish Market and everywhere in this city are well decorated with mango leaves and banana trunks. Pujas are performed during the morning hours. The priest decorates the haal khata with stamp of coins dipped in red vermilion - a symbol of good sign. They send invitation cards to the prospective customers or make a phone call or sends SMS to join the festival.

The shops like Rajlakshmi Jewellers, Chandan Jewellers, Durgapur Variety Stores and others celebrate the day most gorgeously. People with ethnic dresses queue up themselves in the respective shops. They exchange warm wishes, clears up their dues and return with gifts, sweet packets and calendars.

Gouranga Banik a trader of Benachity who has a number of stalls says, “Before poila baisakh we remain very busy throughout the month of chairtra on the occasion of chaitra sell. In fact it has become a fashion now to shop in the chaitra sell market at a discount price. Crowds of people of the twin city pick and choose their choiceable items from us. But things differ from regular business and chaitra sell business. Customers are very fastidious and always try to bargain heavily. ”

Sweet shops owners are very busy. Naren Saha of a renowned sweet shop says, “Chhana become scares on this day due to heavy demand. We bring the chhana from other places to meet up the demand. Since we never compromise with quality and size of the sweets, people always try to book their packets from there. ”

Not only the sweet shop almost all the gift shops are busy now to sell their gift items. Exchange of gift among the loved ones is now in practice among the city people on this day. Arshad Ali, owner of Archie’s, City Center says, “This year we have collected varieties of show pieces, Photo Album, Pens and greetings Card. The sales of such items are high this year. The rush of young and kids are high now – in fact elder people come rare to our shop for gifts on the special occasions.”

Health is wealth – this has now become the only mantra of the city people.

Though people in this industrial city are busy with their hectic day to day schedule, various career option, proper education of their siblings, family pressure and of course to maintain sociability, yet a good number of people are utilizing their time for keeping their health fit. Now groups of people are going to different centers at the predawn hour to practice yogasana or pranayama with the help of veteran instructors there. In Durgapur Steel City the rapid growth in number of various yogpits, gym centers and spas rightly proclaim so and the craze for pranayama – the art of breathing and the art of living – the packages of Swami Ramdev’ji and Shri Shri Rabi Sankar’Ji is high now in this city. Even the kids, the housewives and the school and college goers are practicing pranayama regularly. Age is no bar. Today Pranayama has entered every drawing room of our country and people from every corner of our society irrespective of age, sex and profile are getting wrapped up in the newly found meaning of health
Training is going on
.

Pataki Chowdhury, 75 of Indraprastha, Amrai says, “I am practicing such pranayama since five years and in my late seventies still I am energetic and young. I keep myself busy from dawn to late night. A few years ago I was suffering from several ailments but after practicing such pranayama and asanas I am quite fit and energetic. I do not like to miss a day be it a stormy or frosty. ”

In Sarada Nagar groups of women are performing such activities since a few years. The instructor, Biswanath Acharjee says, “After having a training in this field I teach this technique to the interested people here. In my group more than 35 people come here regularly and all are very particular and punctual. I feel proud of my team members.

Uday Chatterjee, who has recently taken over the charge as Instructor of Amrai Yoga Shibir says, “A few years ago I was suffering from many ailments. I consulted a good number of renowned doctors for my problems but to no effect. After that I started to follow the instructions of Ramdev’ji wholeheartedly and now I am leading a healthy, happy and peaceful life. In my team there are nearly 50 members and all are very particular in this respect. I pay hearty attention to all the participants here. ”

Shibdas Banerjee of this shibir says, “A year ago I was so ill that I had to go to Vellore for my treatment. My wife and son became hopeless with me. But after joining this shibir and doing such activities now I am free from all such problems. I remain active throughout the day. Thanks to our senior instructor and adviser Gouranga Chandra Sikdar whose personal care and instruction/advice helped me a lot. Only for his active endeavour this shibir was started in our village a few years ago and now gained much popularity. Today it has given a new life to lots of those who had given up the least hope of survival and their life was engrossed with morbidity, melancholy and mood of hopelessness & feelings of inadequacy. ”
At the predawn hours before the early rays of sun kisses the industrial town and when the maximum are still enjoying the last hours in their cozy bed, ignoring the severe cold and rain they gather in this holy place and under the banyan trees and start practicing yoga, exercise and pranayama in the serene atmosphere.

Amar Saha, Naru Gopal Dutta, Mithu Rajak are to name a few who were suffering from obesity, hypertension, insomnia and some other problems and could not even dream to pass a day without popping pills and medicine are now leading a healthy life.

Even the women folk are also in no way lagging behind. Though they are typically not quite inclined towards joining such activities because of their domestic drudgery; yet the number of female participants in these two camps is in no way less appreciable. “Pranayama makes us doubly energetic and has given us a new blend of life” states the housewives who are staunch members of the camp. Even the working women and the college girls also manage to cut some time to attend the pranayama session by compromising with their busy and hectic schedule.

‘The benefits of pranayama need no recommendation. The only thing that needs a hearty commendation is the effort and the enthusiasm and that only has made these shibir a frontrunner in this noble mission. Yogic principle is now considered as the highest form of purification and self discipline covering both mind and body. I would be happy if more people join here. ’ said GC Sikdar further.

Career options programme organized by the Rotary Club of Durgapur, Central in Association with NIIT Durgapur.

“If you are unable to crack JEE or IIT, you need not to think that your life has been spoilt utterly and not to be worried since now there are ample scope for the students pursuing their graduation level degrees in general line” – says Mr. Prosant Kumar, Director of NIIT, Durgapur in the seminar organized by NIIT in association with the Rotary Club of Durgapur Central on 25th March at Peerless Inn, Durgapur.
In the seminar nearly 200 students from Durgapur, Asansol, Andal, Kajora, Panagarh and other coalfield areas of different branches like Science, Humanities and Commerce attended the programme and everybody got a new meaning in respect of the options for choosing their careers.
Mrs. Madhuchhanda Sengupta, President of the Rotary Club of Durgapur Central says, “Actually stiff competitions and plenty of option now make the student confused. Before opening for a career firstly every student should analyze their interest, inclination, hobby, potentiality and opportunities as one can excel more excel more in the field of their own interest. In fine she even quoted the Darwin’s famous principle ‘survival of the fittest’ in this crucial matter.”
In fact now almost all the parents think that there are no career options other than Engineering and Medical line and if the mediocre students are failing to crack the entrance examinations, parents are starting to abuse their wards and they are getting frustrated and demoralized. Few guardians are considering the passions of their children while opting for their streams, courses and to give weightage for their options in other courses according to their interest for building their career. Parents never give any priority to the self-potentiality and interest of the candidates.
To weed out the thorn of confuse Rotary Club of Durgapur, Central and NIIT Durgapur had jointly endeavored to contour line of careers of today’s youth Gen-Y.
Tarak Nath Roy, Head (Sales & Marketing) of NIIT Durgapur said, “We take this privilege to introduce ourselves as World’s largest IT Training and Placement organization having shaped the futures of millions of students during our last thirty years of operations. It has been our constant endeavour to add value and provide the much required guidance to students who are at the threshold of taking the most important decision in their lives, the decision pertaining to the choice of career. NIIT, Asia’s No. 1 Talent Development Organization is proud to be associated with Rotary Club of Durgapur, Central and in collective effort of ours we arrange event called Gen-Y - Ask your Pioneer which is an exposition of the various career paths available for a student.”
Rtn. Dr. Sabuj Sengupta said, “Now there are various institutions rich in academic offers diverse courses in the undergraduate level under the best universities which offer a broad spectrum of curricula and courses to suit the students’ interest and strength. Reputed universities offer courses such as Accountancy, Architecture, Arts, Social Science, Business Administration, Computing, Environmental Studies, Law, Nursing and etc. Now there is abundance of opportunities to broaden their horizon and develop cross cultural perspectives.”
“Now many students are even opting their career for Sports, Dance, Acting, Music, Hotel Management which were really rare a few decades ago. Today there are remunerative career in theatre and cinema and many students are opting their career in music even. These careers are catching up a trend now among many bright students” – avers the experts there. .
Among the multifarious benevolent activities of the Rotary Club they are now showing the right path to the young generation who are the real asset of our society. They think that if young generation runs out of track then the society as a whole will never be able to lead in the path. Since many students are now busy with their plus two examinations and could not attend the seminar, Rotary Club of Durgapur Central will arrange similar event for them in April this year.
