Crossing Hurdle.

Crossing Hurdle.

Ambulances, emergency services and commuters, school buses regularly get struck in long traffic jams at Mayabazar Level Crossing Gate.

Administrative Authorities and the Political Leaders are silent on this burning problem of this thickly populated area in the southern part of this industrial city.

The Mayabazar Railway level crossing gate has become a cause for concern for the residents of DTPS Township. Industrialists are complaining that it’s affecting their business. Emergency services such as Ambulances and Fire fighters are kept waiting and children on their way to school run late. Even residents from nearby villages like Purusha, Angadpur, Arjunpur, Raturia, Jiten Nagar are all complaining for their acute problem only  for this level crossing since long. The problem lies in the frequency at which the gate is closed. The railway authorities close the gate every 10 to 15 minutes to pass the important  trains like Rajdhani, Intercity, Purba , Satabdi and other express and super fast trains. The gates are also closed for the numerous passenger and goods trains that travel on the Howrah – Asansol route round the clock. During peak hours it can take up to 30 minutes to get clearance. Traffic snarls can sometimes extend up to one kilometer on both sides. The trouble begins when the gate opens and traffic at both sides, impatient after the long wait; begin to cross simultaneously resulting in chaos. Commuters said that it had been kept waiting in the long queues as there is no other route to reach the hospitals.

“This Level Crossing is the only gateway of the inhabitants of this area to the outer world, mainly the people residing in Durgapur Thermal Power Station Colony and its neighboring villages and immense number of commercial fraternity people doing their trades in this Area. But the worst sufferers are certainly the acute patients and the students to whom time is the essence. Most of the people depend heavily on DTPS Hospital but as  it is not so well-equipped to handle serious/acute  patients and in the crisis hours such patients are referred to the Steel Plant Hospital and the Mission hospital and even to Kolkata and people have no other options but to cross this railway crossing to reach there in time. Students also have their anxious moments when their school-bound buses are stranded at length at the level crossing helplessly while time tickles by and it comes down too heavy on them during the big events like Board Examination. Apart from that people from all walks of life get affected by only one hindrance in this vast area is this level Crossing.  ” – says Dr. S. R. Bhowmik of DTPS Hospital who is connected with many innovative programme and rendered great efforts several time and negotiated a lot with  the administrative authorities and political leaders to solve this  level crossing problem by constructing a Fly Over here.

Industrialists, too, are voicing their complaints. The power sector is based in the southern part of Durgapur City. A group of industrialists have set up several mini-steel plants, sponge iron factories and many other industries here and the area has become an industrial hub. “Our business is hampered to a great extent because such frequent obstructions at the entry route of this area. Added to this is the poor road condition” says all of them unanimously.

Financial establishment like the United Bank of India, Mayabazar (DTPS) Branch, the only Bank in this Vast Areas is also facing great problem to enhance their business maneuver though endowed with their modern infrastructure there in this era of technological development.  “In this age of competition, we have developed our Bank to the great extent but due to this Level Crossing problem and also for lack of conveyance people in large like to avoid to come this area for their various purposes in this Branch. From township it takes at least three to four hours time for their up and down journey excluding the time required in the Bank. In fact still this vast area is remaining under developed than other parts of this City only for poor conveyance system. Social life gets totally collapsed after evening.  For all such impediments except the DVC Employees and the local residents, none are interested to use this Bank mainly for insufficiency of communication and various hindrances like the Mayabazar Railway Level Crossing Gate and the DSP Loco un-manned gate.  As a result our business is getting hampered severely.” – says   Biswajit Dutta, Manager of UBI, Mayabazar (DTPS) Branch.

Aniruddha Chatterjee, a senior employee of DTPS says, “I am an employee of Durgapur Thermal Power Station and coming here since late seventies and noticed no stint of development in respect of roads and communication system as a whole. Besides the Mayabazar Railway Crossing Gate there is another one unmanned loco level crossing gate of Durgapur Steel Plant for transportation of their products and the gate frequently blocks the road for their multiple purposes. A hellish situation occurs when heavy traffics , Ambulance and even fire fighters face both the obstructions of the level crossing gates during their to and fro journey to this vital power station and other areas. When Durgapur City is shining in all the areas, this southern part of Durgapur is still remaining as the land which was avoided by the Pandavas during their sojourn. The step-mother like attitude of the Administrative Authorities is restraining its development in all the spheres and the offspring are also lagging behind.  ”

Residents in this densely populated area have been vocal on the issue. They have, together with the support of political leaders, demonstrated many times to the Railway Authority and the SDO. The residents are in favour of a fly-over which they say will solve the problem. But this suggestion has not made any headway with authorities of the Eastern Railway.

According to the official sources of the Eastern Railway, building a flyover would require permission from the railway ministry. “A large amount of money is involved and we cannot do anything independently.”

“The vehicles which are no mean in number, rushes in from both sides, heavy vehicles from the Power Plant side, mainly the coal carriers and the fly ash carriers and the other vehicles from the east side where there are a hoard of mini steel plants and mushrooming sponge-iron factories and both the streams of heavy vehicles funnels at the level crossing and there wait another queue of vehicles across the rail line entering DTPS area. Now it would not be very difficult to image the chaotic situation that cooks up. A total disorder prevails there making life miserable for all of them in the fray. The whole traffic seems to be in a bottleneck and there is no way out too get the traffic move and this has been happening regularly day in and day out for years and no one seems to be bothered for it. ” – says the business community in all who are suffering a lot for this hindrance.

As the authorities wait, the problem gets worse with every passing day. Parents worry as children run late for school, staff buses and mini buses are delayed in the traffic caught at this crossing. Residents are also apprehensive that accidents may occur any time in this area.

Makar Snan in Damodar.

Makar Snan in Damodar.

Durgapur is not surrounded with much rivers and streams, and the only Damodar overflows with devotees (Punnarthi) for the religious gatherings on the auspicious occasion of Makar Snan at the pre-dawn hours of Poush Sankranti.

In Durgapur Barrage local people arrange several ghats with all possible amenities like hot Tea and Coffee, Mineral Water Bottle, Light snacks and Tiffin, and the most essential fire wood and fuel to make temporary fire places so that people could easily warm up themselves after a holy dip in the chilled water.

Biman Sen,55 a resident of Township says, “Every year we reach Durgapur Barrage with some of my friends for taking this holy bath. We hire a vehicle and come at 4 AM. After taking bath and warming up a while we take tea and coffee, and return. This is our regular programme in this day since 10 years.”

The other group of Samir Banerjee of Ashoke Avenue says, “Every year we around 20 people from our para come here at dawn to take Makar Snan. Actually we also come here for a picnic on that day in Barrage Area. After this episode we all become busy for the picnic. Tiny tots enjoy a lot. Boating (small Boat) is an extra attraction basking in the warm and rejoice the winter sun floating on the boats. Till sunset we all enjoy there. After lunch we arrange quiz competitions, antakshari and enjoy immensely. We also arrange for token gifts and prizes for the participants.”

Benoy Mazumdar a retired teacher of township says, “All over the country this day is observed with great fanfare. It is celebrated with different names in different parts of our country. Now Makar Snan apart from a harvest festival, it is also regards as the beginning of an auspicious phase in Indian culture. It is known as the ‘holy phase of transition.’ Scientifically this day marks the beginning of warmer and longer days compare to the nights.”

Makar Sankranti is Indian’s unbreakable tradition of culture and livelihood. It is a symbol of unity in diversity. This festival gives a message of unit to not just India but to the whole world. Because sun is the only God of world who is worshiped by everyone freely. Festival of Makar Sankranti inspires to have peace and harmony, love and forget the hatred and stay with unity.

Kalpataru Mela in Durgapur.

Kalpataru Mela in Durgapur.

City people are all now in a festive mood. Almost in every weekend they are making some programme either for a picnic or for an outing with their family and friends and to be frank now they have an unending list of such places surrounding this city. A stroll across this city during the winter unfurls a vivid and lively view of the above mentioned phenomenal practice almost daily. Thus it is seem that almost all the parks are remaining crowded with people of all ages.

Besides such picnic and outing people enjoyed a lot on the renowned melas like Shantiniketan, Bishnupur a few days ago and after that the people became gladdened again for the famous Kalpataru Mela which starts every year from the first day of the year. It is held in the Gammon Friends’ ground near Durgapur Station adjacent to DPL Colony. It starts from 1st January and continues up to 10th. Probably this is the oldest fair held in the still city and almost crowds of people from Asansol, Raniganj, Andal, Ukhra, Panagarh, Burdwan and another adjoining places enjoy a lot here.

Book fair and Agricultural fair (Krishi Mela) is the prime attraction of Kalpataru Mela. From the last year the organizers are paying special attention to attract much people in the Book Fair. The renowned publishers of Kolkata arrange several stalls with their latest publications, books of Knowledge, Story, Fiction, Devotional, Recitation and some rare books that are not available in market easily. School children eagerly wait for this fair to have their choiceable books. Moreover the organizers arrange in the lawn of the book fair several competitions like Recitation, Quiz, News Reading to attract the school children much.

Agricultural fare is also very attractive in the fair. Not only the agriculturist join the fair but a large section of people who have a passion for gardening hops the stalls inquisitively for rare kinds of flower and fruit seeds and plants. The another attraction of this krishi mela is that almost daily some experts in this field comes and they interacts with the people about their personal problem and advise what type of pesticides and manure to be applied for the full growth of the plants.

Amalendu Sen, the sr. active organizer says, “Though Durgapur has developed in all the fields in the recent years, yet this particular fair has not lost its old charm. The mad rush witnessed at the fair is something extra ordinary in this era of shopping malls and large company showrooms. The large Gammon ground seems small at times when the crowds swell up and there seems to be no space even for walking.  Perhaps fair will never lose the charm and importance from our life.”

The authority now has taken much precaution for fire fighting and security measure. They have installed close circuit TVs in several points and made a close vigil on the fairground to avoid any  untoward incidents.

They authority arranged every day various cultural programmes from afternoon to late night where the famous artist from Kolkata and other places performed their solo and group programme. Many people enjoyed this programme ignoring the chilled atmosphere.

In search of Nalen Gurer Sandesh

In search of Nalen Gurer Sandesh.

City people are now crazy for the sweetmeats flavoured with Nalen Gur.
Winter has come. It is the season for enjoying the days in the soothing temperateness of the Sun anywhere - be it in the crowdy or lonely sea beach edged by palms and casuarinas or just to relax in a space where peace resides. It is the season for various flowers, fruits and vegetables, a season for picnic or for a short trip in the weekend amid the places abundant with scenic natural beauties under the clear sky in the soft sunlight to get comfort from shivering cold. Besides all these pleasant things in the winter none can ignore the yummy taste of Nalen Gurer Sandesh, Rasagollas and many other such sweets. Almost all the people are crazy for the sweetmeat with the falvour of Nalen Gur (molasses prepared from the sap of the date palm) in this season. The Sandesh with the browny pink tinge is very dear to all and sundry. Even the people suffering from high blood sugar cannot resist themselves to have at least a piece in this season most avidly. Some people are so fond of Nalen Gur in its liquid form that they take it regularly with chapaties or luchies or with many other things. Local people who prepare say, “The juice from those trees on the first day of the renewed incision into the date trees for its juice after a respite of three days is very tasty and people in large like to take the juice here in the morning. We sell Rs. 5/- per glass. The  molasses prepared from this type of juices is also very nice and highly flavoured. ”
Come to this City and see almost all the sweet shops like Subhash Sweets, Sweet Corner, Ruma Sweets, Rabin Sweets, Sweet Palace, Saha Sweets are selling plethora of sweets like Sandesh, Monda, Bhapa Sandesh, Kancha Golla with the flavour of Nalen Gur.  In some shops people are to make them queue up for a long time to have their desired mouthwatering items in this season. In almost all the Sweet Shops, the rate of such sweets is also very cheap in comparison to other places. The minimum price is Rs. 5/- and maximum is Rs. 10/- that is within the reach of everybody. Durgapur people as a whole say, “The rate of sweets in Durgapur is too cheap than in Kolkata or any other places. In Kolkata no sweets are available below Rs. 5 to 10 whereas in many shops in Durgapur sweets at just Re.3/- is also available now. Forget about the rate of sweets in other Metros like Bangalore or Mumbai.”
Nani Gopal  Saha, owner of Saha Sweets, Gurudwara Road, Benachity says, “We sell Nalen Gurer Tal Sansh – ‘Jalbhara Sandesh’ like the famous items in Chandannagore just at Rs. 15/- per piece and people are very fond of this item in our shop. Beside we sell varieties of sweetmeats of Nalen Gur. ”
Nalen Gur are coming from local areas like Purusha, Angadpur, Dhandabag, Sarpi and many such nearer places where people make this Gur making temporary tents for two three months there. But the demand of Nalen Gur from ‘Basirhat’ and ‘Khejuri’ at Midnapore is very high in Durgapur Markets. The demand of Nalen Gurer Patali for making Payesh and other palatable items is also not negligible says Nabagopal Kundu, the owner of R. N. Kundu & Sons, Benachity.
Tapan Sen, Manager of Subhash Sweets says, “We are running this Sweet Shop since the inception of this City. We sell variety of sweets. Moreover, our Singara is also very popular in Durgapur. Come in Evening any day, you must have to wait for at least half an hour to have our Singaras. Previously the people were very passionate here to have only the Nalen Gurer Sandesh but now the demand of Rasagollas with the flavour of Nalen Gur is also high. None can ignore the delicious taste of the spongy Rosogullas of light orange colour with the flavour of Nalen Gur now. Some are coming to take hot Rasagollas here, which they believe are good for health.  Moreover during the marriage season and other family parties now everybody prefers sweets with the flavour of Nalen Gur and it continues up to March”
Moumita Das, an Actress of local Drama Troop, B-Zone, says, “I do not care of diabetes or others for taking sweets and particularly with the savour of Nalen Gur which is hot favourite to me in this season. In fact I follow the lines of Tagore “….. Sandesh Makhia Dinu Tate” and I enjoy sweets with anything at any time, not only as desert items but also as starters even.

Hemophilia – the alarming disease spreading rapidly in our country

Hemophilia – the alarming disease spreading rapidly in our country.

Relentless activities of Durgapur Chapter to fight with such disease.

When the whole world is concerned about the life threatening disease of Thalassemia, a good number of people are still remaining reluctant about the other life threatening disease like Hemophilia which is also spreading rapidly in our country. To combat with such a dreadful disease,  Hemophilia Federation India (HFI) established in 1983 in our country and run by persons with Hemophilia (PWH) with the help from medical Fraternity as a self-help NGO.   Now HFI represents India as National Member Organization at World Federation of Hemophilia, based in Canada. It also works in close collaboration with World Health Organization and NACO, especially in the area of safety vis a vis supply of blood products.

Considering this alarming position in our country some benevolent people like DD Sen, Subhajit Banerjee, Dr. P. Bhattacherjee, Dr. S. P. Mukherjee, Dr. M. K. Bagchi, Ajoy Roy, Dibendu Chakrabborty and many such eminent persons of Durgapur conducted the Hemophilia Movement in this city and established the Durgapur Chapter of Hemophilia Society at Satyajit Roy Sarani, City Center, Durgapur-16.

Ajoy Roy, Secretary of this Chapter says, “Way back in early 1999, some social activists and benevolent people with the support from some committed medical experts of the locality and the persons suffering from hemophilia and  their families & well wishers decided to form a voluntary organization with the object of locating, educating, arranging proper treatment & rehabilitating the Hemophiliacs in the districts of Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia & Dhanbad ( Jharkhand).  Thus Hemophilia Society-Durgapur Chapter (HSDC) came into existence. The society is registered as a no- profit , voluntary organization  under West Bengal Registration of Society Act 1961 on 1st May’1999 Since then it is continuously engaged in its targeted field of action in spite of limited resources.  We are affiliated to the Hemophilia Federation (India), New Delhi which is also affiliated to  the World  Federation of Hemophilia, Montreal, Canada.”

It is learnt from the honourable Faculty Members that persons with Hemophilia has one or more of the 10 (I, II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII) clotting factors in the blood, either missing or deficient. The absence of deficiency of any clotting factors in the blood but usually Factor VIII or factor IX causes Hemophilia. It affects males almost exclusively and is found d in all populations irrespective of caste, creed, religion or geographical variation. Thus males are sufferers of Hemophilia and females are the carriers who can pass on Hemophilia to the next generations.

“Hemophilia  Society- Durgapur Chapter  ( HSDC)  started   functioning  with a few  patients with hemophilia (PWHs) and located  some  more PWHs  subsequently . Presently it’s   PWHs member strength is 148. However, its target is to locate all the PWHs in its command area which is estimated to be around 1000 considering the population of the region.  Present status of PWHs is as under:

We strive to continue our efforts to identify more children with hemophilia, give them proper support and educate them about its possible treatment before they develop major problems and get crippled.” – says Dr. M. K. Bagchi associated with this organization since its inception.

Dr. P. Bhattacherjee, Vice President of this Society says, “Hemophilia is a genetically transmitted, life-threatening, chronic bleeding disorder, which can disable the affected person when left untreated. This is an inherited bleeding disorder, transmitted on a gene of the X chromosome. The X chromosome is  a gender determining chromosome, which makes hemophilia a gender-linked disorder. Therefore the female in the family becomes the carrier of the disease and almost exclusively the males inherit the carrier gene from their mother, suffer from the disease. Even though it is transmitted genetically, 20% of the reported cases are due to fresh mutation. People with Hemophilia (PWH) have a low level or absence of blood clotting factors in their blood. Deficiencies of Factor VIII & IX are the most common. The lack of clotting factor causes person with hemophilia (PWH) to bleed for longer period of time than normal. The main problem for PWH is internal bleeding, mainly into muscles and joints. Haemorrhage within joints and muscles, unless treated adequately   with replacement therapy, results in painful, progressive joint damage and muscle atrophy: resulting in severe disability and limitations of daily activities with restriction in social participation.  Though not curable   Haemophilia can be managed with the infusion of life saving drug – Anti Hemophilic Factor (AHF).  Unfortunately AHF is not manufactured in India and has to be imported from overseas.  Due to exorbitant cost and general scarcity of AHF, most PWH resorts to wet blood transfusion, exposing themselves       to blood borne diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B/C. The incidence of this disorder is global, affects all ethnic groups & and 1 in every 10,000 people is born with this rare disorder. India being a population of over one billion has an estimated 1,00,000 PWH population”.

Dr. C. R. Mukherjee, Vice President (Medical) says, “There are different type of Hemophilia but the most common are deficiency of Factor VIII that is Hemophilia-A and deficiency of Factor IX that is Hemophilia-B. When a patient of hemophilia comes to the hospital with a major bleed, his survival depends on immediate administration of the life saving Anti Hemophilia Factor (AHF).  For an intracranial bleed (bleeding in the head), a patient may require as much as 25,000 units of AHF costing Rs. 1 to 2 Lacs of rupees and this may even go up to 50,000 units plus of AHF, costing Rs 4-5 Lacs for any major surgical interventions. Unfortunately in most of the Government- run hospitals in India, the required AHF is not available and the only treatment given to the patients is the blood transfusion, which is only done to make up for the blood loss in case of external bleeding. ”

Secretary Shri Roy says further, “We have already appealed to the Government and the Corporate Sectors to come forward and join their hands with us and to extend their financial and other help and to provide free Anti Hemophilic Factor to all PWHs in West Bengal. Even we have appealed to all the benevolent people and other philanthropic organizations of this twin city to sponsor/contribute the cost of treatment of at least a child suffering with Hemophilia and also to bear the education cost of such children so that they can continue their  studies also.” In fine he said that for the commendable activities of this chapter has got the Award by Bayer Health Care Pharmaceuticals, USA in 2006 for their project ‘Catch Them (Hemophilic) as Toddlers.’

Official says,” During this time many organizations like DSP, ADDA, DMC, Rotary Club, ASP and many benevolent persons and  well wishers have already donated a good amount of money. But since the medicines and the treatments are very expensive until and unless we get help from the Government, it is hard for us to run such a unit for the benefit of the people in this vast Areas like, Burdwan, Asansol, Durgapur, Purulia and Dhanbad.”

For the last two years we are arranging such exhibition with the paintings and sculptures of the artists of Durgapur, Asansol and Burdwan. Previously only a few were showed their interest to display their valuable works but now many artists are coming to join with us and displaying their works spontaneously in our Gallery. Apart from showing their works, we also provide suggestions for restoration and preservation of valuable paintings and objects of the art. We know how valuable their paintings are and accordingly we instruct the budding artists how to preserve their paintings particularly during the monsoon and summer seasons when the pictures get mostly damaged. ”
Manoj Kumar Kolay, the talented artist , an employee of Durgapur Thermal Power Station, DVC, says, “For the last two years we are arranging such paintings in the Srijani Hall. Thanks to the Mayor and other Officials for providing us such a nice auditorium in the heart of this city where many people can join this exhibition. But to arrange such a huge programme we are facing great difficulties and the much impediment is adequate finance. We spend all the expenses from our own and that is becoming too hard for us.  If we get help from the Government or any private organizations we hope we can run our mission in a large scale where many renowned artists of this twin city can display their works and the buds in this field also get enlightened. We look forward for their immense support to share our thoughts and ideas on Indian contemporary art that will inspire us on our journey towards perfection in this industrial town.”

Tapan Das of SEPCO Township, Durgapur says, “I manage two studios one in New Delhi and the other in Durgapur. After obtaining Diploma in Fire Arts from the Academy of Music and Fine Arts and Visual Art from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata I devote myself in this field. I have already exhibited my works in many places in our Country since 2009 and I try to join with my works anywhere I get a call. In this Harmony, it is our endeavour to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of art forms among general people, the students and the kids so that they also get interest to build their career as an Artist. ”
